Legal & General Investment Management restructures its leadership team

Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) today announced a restructure of its leadership team. This move is designed to drive LGIM’s future business growth across its key product ranges while continuing to meet its clients’ evolving needs, in the UK and internationally.

Mark Zinkula, Chief Executive of LGIM, said “LGIM has been growing rapidly internationally and enhancing its product set and investment solutions for its customers. Clients like our products and services, but increasingly want to access them via integrated solutions. Today’s management changes will drive this forward, and help to deliver growth in the Americas, UK, Europe and Asia.”
The key changes to LGIM’s management structure are:

Aaron Meder has been appointed Head of Investment, a new role, and he will lead LGIM’s investment teams, excluding Real Assets such as property and infrastructure

Roger Bartley is appointed Vice-Chairman – Investments and will work closely with Mark Zinkula to help grow LGIM’s business in new markets and distribution channels. Roger will also continue to provide strategic input to the investment teams;

Bill Hughes is appointed Head of Real Assets, a new role, bringing together LGIM’s direct investment capabilities in property and infrastructure into one team;

Mike Craston is appointed Vice Chairman – Legal & General Investment Management America. He will be focusing exclusively on providing strategic direction for LGIM’s successful and expanding US business and will transition his responsibilities in other regions;

and Sarah Aitken is appointed Head of Distribution and will extend her responsibilities to lead all distribution in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including Institutional and Retail.

Ali Toutounchi, Managing Director Index Funds, has announced his intention to retire at the end of 2015, and will be working closely with Mark and Aaron to appoint his successor and transition his responsibilities.  Ali was instrumental in founding LGIM’s Index business and on retirement he will continue to be associated with LGIM in an on-going capacity.

These changes will be implemented this month and are subject to appropriate registrations and approvals in the relevant jurisdictions.

Biographies

Mark Zinkula – Chief Executive Officer
 
Mark was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) in 2011 and sits on the board of Legal & General Group plc as a group executive director. Mark was the CEO of Legal & General Investment Management America (LGIMA) since 2008 and a director of LGIMA since the business was established in 2006. Prior to joining LGIMA, Mark was at Aegon Asset Management, where he was Global Head of Fixed Income. Prior to Aegon, Mark worked for the Principal Financial Group. Mark is a CFA charterholder and holds MA and MBA degrees from the University of Iowa. He also completed a one-year programme at the London School of Economics.

Aaron Meder – Head of Investment

Aaron was appointed as Head of Investment responsible for solutions, active fixed income, active equity and multi-asset teams in January 2015, having joined LGIM in 2013 from LGIMA, where he was Head of US Pension Solutions from 2010. In this role, Aaron was responsible for the construction and management of customised investment solutions, including LDI, for US pension clients. Prior to joining LGIMA, Aaron was a managing director and Head of Asset-Liability Investment Solutions, Americas for UBS Global Asset Management. At UBS, he also was a member of the Global Investment Solutions group and led the US Pension Advisory Group and the Asset-Liability Investment Committee. Prior to UBS, Aaron worked at

Towers Perrin and Watson Wyatt Worldwide. Aaron is a CFA charterholder, FSA and EA. He holds a BS in actuarial science from the University of Illinois and an MBA from JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Roger Bartley – Vice Chairman - Investments

Roger was appointed Vice Chairman – Investments in January 2015 working closely on growth in new markets and distribution channels, and providing strategic input and guidance to the investment teams. Previously he had responsibility for LGIM’s Global Fixed Income team. Roger joined LGIM in 2006 from Gartmore Investment Management, where he was Chief Investment Officer, Fixed Income. Prior to Gartmore, he was at Chase Investors as Head of Global Fixed Income and Deutsche Bank Capital Management (UK) as Chief Investment Officer, Fixed Income. Roger graduated from London School of Economics with a master’s degree in economics.

Mike Craston – Vice Chairman - LGIMA

Mike was appointed Vice Chairman – LGIMA in January 2015 focusing on providing strategic direction for the US business. Previously Mike was Managing Director, Global Institutional Business. In this role Mike has overall responsibility for LGIM’s institutional pension fund business and overall responsibility for directing, developing and promoting LGIM in the Institutional pensions market. Mike joined LGIM in 2004 and prior to this, worked at Aegon Asset Management as Director of Institutional Business and with Scottish Equitable Asset Management, initially as an investment sales manager and subsequently as the director of Sales and Marketing. Mike previously worked at Schroder Investment Management, Standard Life and Guardian Royal Exchange.

Sarah Aitken – Head of Distribution

Sarah Aitken is Head of Distribution, leading all distribution in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. She joined LGIM in 2014 from Insight Investment, where she held the title of Head of Distribution. Prior to that, she worked at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and JP Morgan. Sarah started her career at Cazenove as a UK equity analyst. She graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University and has an MA in history.

Ali Toutounchi – Managing Director (Index Funds)

Ali is Managing Director (Index Funds) and a fund director for a number of our major clients. Ali joined LGIM in 1995 from NatWest Securities, where he spent four years leading the Global Programme Trading Unit. Prior to this, Ali spent three years as Assistant Director of Index Funds at UBS Asset Management and four years as a senior quantitative analyst at Wood Mackenzie Stockbrokers. Ali holds a first class honours degree in economics and Statistics from University College, London, and a PhD in stochastic models of Investment from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Ali is a member of the FTSE Policy Group.
