Bluefin Wealth Management helps Legal & General educate students on Maths and Money.
08 February 2011
"Money, Money, Money" provides help to over 1,000 Year 10 students (14 and 15 year olds) a year to prepare them for adult life and to understand the value and management of money. It is a joint venture between Legal & General and education consultants Magnified Learning supported by volunteers from the company’s staff.
Patrick Murphy, Practice Head at Bluefin Wealth Management said; "Going into a school to help the next generation prepare for their working lives is a good way to start their learning experience. As a profession we can also get insights into their views on money and debt with a view to shaping advice and services in the future. It’s great to be working in partnership with product providers like Legal & General to instil the right values towards money as the next generation enter into their working lives. I wish more would do the same"
Mark Gregory, Legal & General Executive Director Savings, who has volunteered for part of the programme in a school in Surrey himself said; "Money, Money, Money is an initiative I am personally very keen on, where we are putting volunteer employees into schools to work with year 10 pupils to help them understand the rigour and challenge of personal finance management as they move from home life into adulthood, a real key change point for them. The programme began in earnest in July and has proved very successful in the last 12 months. In fact with the help of Bluefin we have beaten our 2010 target of reaching 1,000 students."
Ian Green, Assistant Headteacher at QK School added, "We are fully committed to preparing our pupils for academic attainment but we are equally focused on helping them develop the skills and knowledge they will need to thrive in their working lives. Having a day focused on financial awareness has been hugely enhanced by the presence of volunteers from the business world, each with their own story to tell about their own highs and lows of managing money."
The day certainly seemed to reach many of the QK pupils: Bhavisha Umrania and Bree Faucher of year 10 commented: ‘I thought it was fun because we learned how to save money and we learned how to get out of debt…we need to start saving for uni – and things we want to buy! We learned it’s actually important doing a plan for the things we want to do in our lives."
As a leading provider of risk, savings and investment management products Legal & General is committed to helping to prepare the next generations for their working lives. The programme is free for schools and involves Legal & General employees working along side Magnified Learning facilitators to help small teams of students solve a series of practical problems to build their confidence about managing money in the real world, for example; What might I expect to earn in my first job? If I move out of home how much will it cost me? What are my options if I get into difficulties?
Helen Buchanan – Distribution Director of Workplace Savings said "We see this sort of activity as key to building strong relationships with our business partners. This is the first of many initiatives for our business partners to work together on key issues such as financial inclusion in 2011 as part of doing business with us."
