In 2010, we launched an a award to recognise the individuals within our suppliers’ organisations who have been leaders of their CSR activities or been the force to make a ‘Make a Difference’ to their communities.

We are delighted to announce that the winner of our inaugural 2010 Shining Star award is Karen Warrington of Enterprise Rent-a car.

Karen secured the agreement of her colleagues in Enterprise Rent-a-Car to partner with The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick and commit to SOS Puffin which has assisted with an increase of the puffin population on the island of Craigleith. She organised two separate days of shrub clearing with 12 volunteers during non nesting seasons which has been confirmed as making a huge difference to the habitat for puffins.

Tom Brook OBE, Chief Executive of the Scottish Seabird Centre said, “There is still a huge amount to do to reinstate fully the puffin habitat on Craigleith but with the help of volunteers like the team from Enterprise, we are confident that we are making a very significant difference. Our new live-streaming webcams mean that volunteers will be able to see for themselves when the puffins return to the island to take up residence in their old burrows, previously blocked by tree mallow.”

Karen also encouraged Enterprise Rent-a-car to sign up to The Big Green Footprint Scheme in Fife and under her enthusiastic management, they rerouted a coastal path where erosion had stripped away considerable areas of the land and in the process had caused the Coastal Path to collapse. The project has improved the appearance of the path and the safety of walkers.

Alex Wolny, Director, Group Procurement & Supplier Management said; “The nomination for Karen in the inaugural Shining Star awards was the outstanding submission. Karen has demonstrated a commitment and passion to contribute to the local community in which Enterprise operate through a range of diverse initiatives. Of particular note is that Karen’s day job does not directly provide for opportunities in this way so she has really gone the extra mile to seek opportunities to make a difference. From an excellent response to our inaugural Shining Star awards, Karen emerged a worthy winner. Congratulations!’”

Karen Warrington said “'I am absolutely thrilled to be recognised by Legal & General for the CSR initiatives that we at Enterprise Rent-A-Car [Scotland & Northern Ireland] have taken part in this year. It has been a pleasure to work with these charities and organisations & see the positive results achieved by all of our volunteers hard work and dedication to these thoroughly deserving causes. I am looking forward to new & continued initiatives this year that can make a difference to our environment and landscape in Scotland & Northern Ireland'.”

The winner was decided by representatives from Business in the Community, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, our CSR manager and our Director, Group Procurement & Supplier Management. The outcome was announced at a formal awards ceremony and dinner for all shortlisted finalists at our Coleman Street office on 31 January.
